Top Bryss Maths: Extreme Black Reach List Building


Well now, I suppose I'd better start costing stuff out for the Assault of Black Vengeance on Dark Reach fight. Feel free to ignore this post, as I'm just numbers thrashing. On the other hand, because I'm writing this down as it comes into my head, it's a good look at how my mind works.

For those who can't be bothered with working, here's the souped-up Black Reach list, ready to take their crown back.

Right, I know that the base contents of Black Reach add to 590 for the Marines and 450 for the Orks. That's 1040 points.

Dark Vengeance is harder, as I don't play Dark Angels, but I'm going to play them under the more recent Space Marine book over the DA one which will be updated at some point. The Cultists I will treat as 4 points base based on rumours. Thank goodness I don't need to cost the Chaplain, although if I did I'd base it on the BA Reclusiarch as 'Scape has the book. Ballpark figures are:

Company Master with combi plasma and power sword - 125-ish
Librarian - 100-ish
Tactical Squad with plasma pistol, plasma gun and plasma cannon - 200-ish
Deathwing Terminator Squad with chainfist and assault cannon - 235-ish
Ravenwing Bikers with plasma gun - 105-ish


Chaos Lord with power sword and plasma pistol - 120
Chosen with power fist, power maul, power axe, lightning claws - NOT 183
10 Cultists with heavy stubber, Champion with shotgun - 65?
10 Cultists with flamer, Champion with 2 CCWs - 60?
Helbrute - 120?

Here's a weird thought. Why does the Champion in the 'pistol' Cultist squad have an extra CCW? Doesn't it just provide the same bonus the pistol did? Maybe he's got one holstered. Anyway, the last thing I need to do is re-cost the Chosen based on their new Attacks and Leadership stats. Let's just put it at 20 for now, giving us a 195 point Chosen unit. This means the Vengeance stuff totals up at a guesstimate of...

DA Total: 765-ish
Chaos: 560-ish
Overall Total: 1325-ish

OK, from this I get a few conclusions. First off, there's a 200 point gap between the Vengeance armies, which is about what I'd expect considering that the box must be biased towards the less awesome-looking army.

Second conclusion is that there's roughly a 285 point discrepancy between the two armies, although to be fair 100 points of that is the Librarian.

Let's see if I can 'bump up' the Black Reach cost by adding wargear that doesn't change the model. Things like artificer armour on the Captain that will put the character points investment in both armies on the same level. Something like:

Black Reach Captain: Power sword, bolter, artificer armour, digital weapons, melta bombs, hellfire rounds - 115 points => 155

The sword may even be big enough to justify Relic Blade status, which adds another 15.

Black Reach Warboss: Power klaw, twin-linked shoota, ammo runt, cybork body, bosspole, 'eavy armour - 85 points => 113

This takes  the discrepancy down to 202. Next, we'll give the Nobz 'eavy armour and stikkbombs for 30 points. 172 now. Give all the Boyz stikkbombs for 20. 152.

Give the Marine Sarge melta bombs and a teleport homer. 132. Give the Dread extra armour. 117.

OK, I'm now officially out of ideas. Wait, no, I can knock off another 66 by adding the White Dwarf Terminator and Nob (who gets 'eavy armour and stikkbombs). I can knock off 18 with Ammo Runts for the Nobz mob. That reduces it by 84, leaving 33 points.

I really can't do any more now. Giving all the Nobz big choppas is pushing the boundaries of Wissiwig a bit too much, but it would mean there's only 3 points in it. I just don't want to corrupt the Black Reach force too much. Meh, frak it, they have a force weapon for Emperor's sake.

Of course, whoever plays the Black Reach side has the choice of 2 ten-Ork squads or one twenty-Ork squad. Which is probably going to be 'Scape, as we mulled it over earlier.
