An Announcement From Your Glorious Anatidine Leader

Hello. I'm a duck. I definitely haven't gone insane or anything. Actual announcement after the jump.

Summary Batrep: Chaos Game 2

It's been, like, a month since I picked up a tape measure. This state of affairs can't continue. Neither can my current pace. But let's shove that all to one side, as I played another game with Chaos. This time, 'Scape's Necrons took to the stage in a battle waged at our 'classic' size of 1250.

Summary after the jump. It's pretty darn devious.

Attempt 1- What The Hell, Huron?

Alright, let's at least try to make something nice. I have 1590 points plus Huron. This inevitably won't be competitive, but it's me, which is the main thing.

Thinking on my earlier point of CSMs not being hordey, I'm an idiot. There is a way they can be hordey. I'm just not used to using them without bolters, is all. If I can't have Berzerkers without paying a minimum of 75 for another HQ, I'll just have something vaguely similar.

Let's go.

Ruthless Snark: Bryss' Guide to Scottish Rules Lawyering, Part 1

Hello! Today's topic is rules interpretation. Why on earth am I bringing up the interpretation of rules? Well, many reasons. One, as an occasional rules writer I know I need to be clear (unless the game I am writing for is Munchkin, of course, in which case being devious is encouraged) and examples of what I should and shouldn't do are nice. Two, I'm reading law, and therefore I have different names for most of the terminology. Three, my Legal System lecturer has a very specific style in which emphasis is put on certain words to hold your attention and you know I like mimicking styles.

Time for a jump break, I reckon. After which I shall show you the correct way to rules-lawyer. Remember, persuasiveness > rules, unless your opponent appeals to a higher civil court. Not criminal, as nobody's dead. We are NOT going to intermingle criminal terms with civil ones.

Begin Anew: Ruthless Casual Blackheart

Just as out of the ashes of death comes the phoenix of rebirth, so too does out of the ashes of inactivity come the Bryss of rebirth. Buoyed by the fact that the people of Aberdeen find me funny enough to laugh at my jokes (which are a lot less snarky than this persona, mind you), I'm making my return to my desk. Today, I'm going to try thrashing a Huron list theory out.

PSA: I'm Still Here

Dear Bryssling readers,

You may notice a severe lack of things happening around here. This is because my true identity has been stupidly busy with practise exams and an upcoming comedy show in which he must perform a five-minute set, among other things. As such, the free time of the entity known as Master Bryss has been short. I can release Let's Play parts on Bryss & 'Scape and that's about it.

Once the next few days are over, I can work on the recovery of my former state. Until then, bear with. Thank you.

Ruthless Mini: Legion of Chance Wants Help!

Well, that's the All Hallows thing out of the way. And Guy Fawkes, too. And yes, there's been a schedule slip. I've had a busy week. Anyway, because I haven't really prepared anything, I'm going to improvise and explore Allies possibilities for the Legion, which includes using it as an ally and using allies on it.

Creature Feature 6th: Abilities Part 2

I haven't got much time right now. However, I can give you another column of Creature abilities. As ever, these are subject to change. Jump.

Shadows On The Walls: Chimera

It's been ages since the last of these banal and stupid posts. Therefore, it's now time for another one. And this time, I'm experimenting with fusion and mixture, because I can. I add my sheep to your sheep, now we have more sheep. Now I'm just making no sense. Wonderful. Blame Foundations of Private Law. Which technically Bryss doesn't know about, as he's a seperate identity to the Secret & Infamous Identity of Master Bryss, also known as True Bryss. Before I lose it utterly, a jump break, then some lovely pictures.

RulesMan's Chaos Review

It's pretty safe to say that my first month of uni posts are being scheduled at a good rate, but I still need to do one more thing with the Chaos book before normal service can be resumed.

This is the post where I don't as much review the book but the mechanics behind the book. Let's see what's new, what's old, what's weird and what's downright confusing in this new volume.

Creature Feature 6th: Abilities Part 1

Abilities, Abilities, Abilities. I could be here all day with the myriad possibilities available to me. I think the first thing I should do is look at the pre-existing ones and maybe update a few of them.

No points costs for these as of yet, as I'm figuring out what I want to do with restrictions.

Like I said, no new ones, although I will heavily change some of the older ones as I see fit.

The Inevitable Chaos FAQ

A short one today. Because of the timescale on which I've broken down this review, the FAQ is up already! And it's addressed two of my main bugbears! Praises be! Exclamation mark!

I'll outline it after the jump.

The Inevitable Chaos Review Part The Last: Fast and Heavy

It's time for the last part of the Chaos review, with Fast Attack and Heavy Support in the spotlight. After this, I can finally get to doing other things again!

The Inevitable Chaos Review Part 4: Elites and Uniques

Let's continue our Chaos review, with a peek at the most expensive and powerful optional extras outside Heavy Support. This is Elites and Uniques, with Ruthless Casual and Top Bryss.

The Inevitable Chaos Review Part 3: Icons, Troops and Cult Troops

Let's get back to analysis. Hopefully we'll be all done by the end of this week. This part is Icons, Troops and the Cult Troops section of Elites. As ever, italics is Top Bryss wisdom.

Mini BatRep: Legion of Chance Attempt #1

I got my first game in with the newly-formed Legion of Chance, versus my Tyranid-playing friend. Again, it's a 1500, Emperor's Will, Dawn of War (we rolled Vanguard Strike but chronically disagreed with it). His list was as ever:

1500 of Tyranids
Winged Hive Tyrant with two pairs of scything talons, Warlord, Use Lowest Leadership trait
(Took Biomancy and got Endurance and Enfeeble)
Tervigon with Regeneration and Catalyst
10 Termagants
25 Hormagaunts with toxin sacs
3 Warriors with 2x deathspitter and scything talons and 1x barbed strangler and scything talons
3 Raveners with rending claws and scything talons
Tyrannofex with rupture cannon and dessicator larvae
Tyrannofex with rupture cannon and dessicator larvae

My list and summary after the jump.

Weekend Silliness: +8 To Backlog

Look at that. That was my backlog 1.5 years ago. Look at how tiny it is. It's so tiny it's unbelievable. My new one is... aargh, I keep making it woooorse.

1 Dark Vengeance set
1 Heldrake (half built, magnetised tongue, not too hard)
1 Fiend (I so want to completely magnetise it, but it looks really hard to do)
5 New Raptors (put the cute little feet on, still deciding on loadout, I think two 5-man units with 2x specials by mixing them with the Old Raptors)
~5 Aspiring Champions (one yet to prime, 2 repaints, 2 primed)
~18 Thousand Sons (repaint and primed)
12 Plague Marines (primed, need to finalise scheme)
~20+ Berzerkers (repaint, I own so damn many, most of the Plagueys were originally these)
~15 Chaos Marines (repaint and primed)
2 Obliterators (repaint)
~5 HQs (repaint and primed)
1 Huron Blackhear (a small touch-up, I reckon)
1 Ahriman (likewise)
5 Old Raptors (primed)
1 Starfire Dragon (50%)
1 Kobold Ogre (80%)
1 Glimmerdusk Ranger (5%)
1 Hexcast Sorceress (primed)
1 …

The Inevitable Chaos Review, Part 2: HQ

Last time, on Top Ruthless Casual Bryss:

*Insert Clarksonic simile here.*

"These new rules do this and this and thi....POWER!!"

And now, the follow up. Units. And a little note on Wargear.

The Inevitable Chaos Review, With A Banal And Stupid Twist, Part 1: Special Rules

Hello, and welcome to the Ruthless Casual analysis of the new Chaos manual. Hello, and welcome to Top Bryss. Wait, what? Yes, I couldn't decide whether or not to review Ye Boke of Ruinous Powers from my gaming perspective, or my silliness perspective. So I'm doing it from both. This is going to be fun. In Part 1, we look at the fluff and all the non-specific special rules.

Weekend Happiness: 50 Days Later...

Yeah, this finally turned up after a month and a bit of waiting. Woohoo! My Super Dungeon Explore set got a new variable!

+1 to Backlog.

Planning An Army: R'Lette's Legion of Chance

This is what R'Lette's Legion looked like at the start of summer, consisting of:

Daemon Prince R'Lette with Wings (not pictured)
Chaos Lord with Terminator Armour and pair of Lightning Claws
6 Black Marines with Meltagun
6 Red Marines with Plasma Gun
5 Black Havocs with 4x Missile Launcher

I'll show you my progress after the jump.

Game Summary: The Dark Eldar Hit The Road!

I'm beginning to get slightly more of a grip on myself, and I'm sure I have a proper space for all this Bryssling/40k stuff now. With that in mind, I got in another game against my old rival who ISN'T 'Scape, using my new Dark Eldar concept against his Tyranids.

Summary after the jump. Things explode. Perhaps.

Shadows On The Walls: Centaurs?

Shadowland... wait, hold on, do any of you even know that's a song from the Lion King musical? Anyway, today's veil of shadows was literally taken last night, so you're lucky to get this. Even if these posts are almost zero-effort. Which, in these dark days where I can't take free time for granted anymore, is a good thing. Have some umbrae.

Bryss' Musings: S.I.X.

It's not long before Giant Coloured Book: Chaos Space Marines is released, and I get to unleash R'Lette's Legion of Chance on the general populace again, accompanied by all their new Hel-based friends. I've sort of pushed the boat out for this one, snapping up all the new plastics, but that should be the penultimate Chaos purchase I make. It'll just depend on whether or not Apostles are any good.

Creature Feature 6th: Basic Statlines

It's about time I started actually posting my work on this thing. All I've done so far is supply an Allies Matrix. Now, I can give you a basic statline. After the jump, of course.

Weekend Seriousness: Freshers

OH GRIEF CHAOS IS ON ORDER. And seriously, what's with the plastic Asp. Champ price? I was expecting £9-10, dammit! Really, I have no choice but to go discount. Well done, GW.

Oh, and they all look great with the exception of the Mutilators, which couldn't be any uglier unless a certain old Spanish woman decided to 'restore' them, if you know the story I'm referencing.

My head is in a complete mess, and it really doesn't help that I'm writing this while listening to the REDLINE soundtrack, which is amazing. Jump break and then important stuff.

Ruthless Mini: Does ANYONE like Vanguard Strike?

I got one and a quarter games in this Saturday, against (shock!) people OTHER than 'Scape. The game I played to completion was a 1500 against Blood Angels, during which Vanguard Strike came up. Both of us immediately agreed it was an utter pain in the arse and did Dawn of War instead. Is this a trend?

Game details and VS musings after the jump.

Video Batrep: Black Reach VS Dark Vengeance

I finally got round to releasing this. Video after ye jump.

Shadows On The Walls: Diorama?

Ah, it's that time again. I need to take more pictures for this, incidentally.... Anyway, jump forward for shadowy goodness.

Ruthless Mini: The Merits of Blob Guard?

You may not think this, but I do actually bother to look at lists that do well in a Hyper-Efficient Setting, so I can take little scraps of it back to the Bryss-Cave and see if I can use it in any way. Total assimilation will be seen as a failure. After the jump, we'll look at Blob Guard and see if I can see any merit in it.

Reading The FAQs, Again...

Puppet squad, mobilise! We have FAQs to analyse!

Loads and loads of one-line paragraphs incoming. As ever, I'm not doing BA, BT, DA, SoB or SW. Because I simply don't care about armies I don't use.

Well, there is one Space Wolf question. Anyway, read on for answers to questions like:

Q: I have just been hit IN THE FACE by a MASSIVE STEAMROLLER. May I take a Cover Save?

You want the answer? Read this.

Bryss' Musings: The Knowledge, Flamers and Dark Angels

I need to put all my most frequent headers into their own folder...

Anyway, time for more Musings. One of them might even be useful for you. Insert jump here.

Argh, curse of one-line paragraphs returns. FAQ analysis tomorrow!

Shadows On The Walls: Lantz Edition

It's back, as shadowy as ever, and now it's even got its own header pic! Useless trivia: this is the only picture of myself I have taken for this blog without wearing a mask. Both people are wearing the same Matrix-style long jacket. And I'm both of them. Now, I'd be the first to admit that I really didn't expect this series to take off. I mean, really, who wants to spend their time looking at shadows of models rather than actual models? Unless you subscribe to Plato's Cave, of course, in which case everything is a shadow to you anyway. The point of all this is that I've received a reader submission for this series, from Lantz of Twin-Linked Awesome and Standard Template Construct fame. So, without further ado, a jump break! Then more Necrons.

Dark Vengeance Solo Mission Evaluation

As I didn't get both videos out today, have a Part 1 and a Part 2. It did mean not being able to use this computer for the best part of 6 hours, but I did it for you ungrateful lot. Here, have a jumpy breaky thingy and then videos.

I found my Creature Feature sheet!

A quick PSA. I intended to put up the first Dark Vengeance Missions 1&2 video today, but it's not working for me right now. Damn rural internet. But never mind that, look what I found:

I've been looking for this, and now I'll tell you why...

Dark Vengeance Review - Top Bryss

Tonight, Sooty falls down a well, Panda discovers nitroglycerine and I flip a £2 coin...
Hello, and welcome to the Top Bryss studio. Now, Games Workshop’s latest entry-level 40k model, the Dark Vengeance, has been released, with a slew of new models under the bonnet. But is it any good? We'll find out after the jump. There's a video bit and everything.

Bryss' Musings #Insert Number Here

Being as I am a country person, I get stuff later than everyone else. Case in point: I got something today I've been waiting for for a long time.

Yes, it's a pair of original 1960s Volkswagen Beetle hubcaps! They'll look great in my aspiring games room/well-lit man-cave.

OK, in all seriousness, it's Dark Vengeance. Jump time!

Weekend Silliness: Shadows On The Walls

As you know, I like banal and stupid wastes of time. I also really like the words 'banal and stupid' in that combination. With that in mind, I'd like to invite you to look at some beautiful Citadel Miniatures. Sorry, I'll rephrase. I'd like to invite you to look at the shadows of some beautiful Citadel miniatures. Come in after the jump, the water's lovely. And shadowy.

Top Bryss Maths: Extreme Black Reach List Building

Well now, I suppose I'd better start costing stuff out for the Assault of Black Vengeance on Dark Reach fight. Feel free to ignore this post, as I'm just numbers thrashing. On the other hand, because I'm writing this down as it comes into my head, it's a good look at how my mind works.

For those who can't be bothered with working, here's the souped-up Black Reach list, ready to take their crown back.

Black Reach Extreme X-Turbo Launcher Hamerhead Eagle i-Thrust (Geoff)- 1322
Captain: Bolter, Relic Blade, Artificer Armour, Hellfire Rounds, Digital Weapons, Melta Bombs
6 Terminators
Dreadnought: Extra Armour
10 Tactical Marines: Flamer, Missile Launcher, Sergeant with Melta Bombs and Teleport Homer
Warboss: Power Klaw, twin-linked Shoota, Ammo Runt, Cybork Body, 'Eavy Armour, Bosspole
6 Nobz: 6 Big Choppas, Stikkbombs, 'Eavy Armour, 6 Ammo Runts
10 Boyz: Big Shoota, Stikkbombs
10 Boyz: Big Shoota, Stikkbombs
3 Deffkoptas: twin-linked Rokkit Launchas

Ruthless Casual: Am I Scythe-Blind? (Part 2)

Last time (yesterday's post, not hard to find) I told you what happened when I brought a mix of Orks and Daemons against a Purecrons (Purecrons? Monocrons? Either works.) list and may or may not have worried too much about Doom Scythes. Today, I decide whether or not this is right.

After the jump, of course. Provided I remember to put it in.

Ruthless Casual: Am I Scythe-Blind? (Part 1)

Here I am again, writing my gaming column. Today's topic revolves around an interesting point 'Scape made at the end of our last game. Am I Scythe blind? Am I too focused on killing Scythes and not focused enough on actually trying to win? Let's find out, after the jump.

Fantasy Miniature to 40k Miniature- The Small Things

As you know, I'm rather a big fan of Fantasy's range of plastic characters, and I already converted the plastic Necromancer into a Sanctioned Psyker. I decided to do it again, this time converting the Empire Master Engineer into a Malleus Inquisitor with hellrifle. For comparison, let's look at the original model.

I'll tell you what needs to go after the jump.

Silliness Bonus: Helbrute, The Slaughterer

Here's a stupid thought I had regarding the Helbrute. It probably makes no sense to anyone but me, but I'm blogging it anyway.

Weekend Silliness: Well, I like Black Reach, but I also like Dark Vengeance. But which is best? There's only one way to find out...

I have now lived through the release of two 40k starter boxes, both of which represented excellent value in their time. But I want to know something; what if the inhabitants of Black Reach got hacked off at being replaced, and teamed up to reclaim their starter box crown?

After the jump, we'll weigh up the contenders.

Rules Review: Chaos Daemons Stuff

Yes, yes, I get it, I get it, I'm late. I don't care. I'm going through these units, because they're important. These are the first 40k rulesets to emerge from 6th Edition. Let's examine them, quick-fire style.

Woohoo, remembered the jump break today!

Post now edited and cleansed of Save errors.

RulesMan: The Force Chart Plural

The expanded 2000 point Force Organisation Chart has been a sticking point for many, as it inevitably was going to be. By this point, many people have wailed on it from the gamer's perspective, and so I feel like it is now my turn to do this.

Wail. Wail wail. Wail wail wail.

There, I feel much better. Now to look at it from a design perspective. After the jump. It's good, lengthy and has a snazzy diagram.

The End Of The Bryssbing Saga (An Open Letter To Mercer)

Dear Mr Mercer, (Blade Runner reference?),

Having taken the time to examine my idea of 'artistic' handwriting, it is with great frustration that I must conclude that the 'L' in 'Bryssling' does look rather like a 'B', due to a particularly artsy flick that went a wee bit too far.

As such, we at Casual Rules Bryssling of a Ruthless Mind Manufactorum (ie, myself and the puppets) have taken the action of greying over the offending curl in a popular graphic alteration application, in order to prevent future generations from believing themselves to be illiterate morons.

The Revenge Of Weekend Silliness: What's In A Name?

It's time for Weekend Silliness, which existed before all this Let's Play nonsense. This week, it will be done in Musings format, before being later interpreted through the Dance Du Crossaints popular in St. Malo. Maybe.

Blast, forgot the jump break again. Right, now it's in.

Random Dungeon Encounter! Again!

M-hmm. We're back in Super Dungeon Explore Land. I've even ordered Candy and Cola, such is my affection for this game. A Top Bryss is in the scripting stage. Anyway, I've finished more stuff, namely the Kobold Flingers.

Yes, once again there are four, allowing me to do a multiple perspective shot thingy. Note that I actually bothered to ink these ones, as otherwise the bandages would look rubbish. Ground level shot time!

After the jump. Oh, and I did the Paladin too, so click and sucklike.

Another Game Of Sixth!

Well, that took longer than I thought it would. Now I can finally stop whining about how annoying this edition is and start thinking properly again. It's probably to do with not owning the bloody book and bloody flyers yet.

Anyway, I tried out a Necrorks list this time, as it's supposed to be a decent combo. Ended up with:

Bryss' Necrorks- 1500

Overlord with Warscythe
Catacomb Command Barge with Gauss Cannon
Royal Court: 1 Cryptek with Destruction and Solar Pulse, 1 with Despair and Veil of Darkness.
Illuminor Szeras
Big Mek on Warbike with Bosspole
10 Immortals with Gauss Blasters
5 Warriors in a Ghost Ark
10 Shoota Boyz with Rokkit Launcha
Wartrukk with Red Paint
5 Lootas and 3 Meks with Big Shoota
3 Deffkoptas with twin-linked Rokkit Launcha
5 Flash Gitz with More Dakka, Shootier and Kaptin Badrukk

Battle summary thingy after the jump. Warning! Said summary is messed up by Firefox. Use IE to get the full effect. I can't speak for other browsers as I don't use an…
