Article by Master Bryss
This article is a response to Force Organisation Chart- The Theme Killer. Here I will explore an alternate method of building an army.

Previously on Bryss’ Messing About With 40k, I introduced the “Sandbox” method of army building, which allowed more theme based armies, but still left room for flexibility. Today I will show you the “Fixed Theme” method, which is restrictive, but gives more power to the units you can have.

For each method I will use Space Marines as an example. Note that these methods may work better for some Codices more than others. I will make up 3 themes for now, if this actually works I will make more in future.

“Fixed Theme” Army- Space Marine Battle Company

In your army you must include a HQ choice and at least two Scoring Units. Armies may include:
·        1-3 HQ units
·        0-4 Elites
·        0-8 Troops
·        0-4 Fast Attack
·        0-4 Heavy Support

A Battle Company has access to the following units:
·        Captain (may not take Terminator armour)
·        Chaplain
·        Librarian
·        Command Squad
·        Dreadnought
·        Tactical Squad
·        Rhino
·        Razorback
·        Drop Pod
·        Assault Squad
·        Devastator Squad

All units except HQ units are Scoring.

“Fixed Theme” Army- Space Marine First Company

In your army you must include a HQ choice and at least two Scoring Units. Armies may include:
·        1-3 HQ units
·        0-4 Elites
·        0-4 Fast Attack
·        0-4 Heavy Support

A First Company army has access to the following units:

·        Captain
·        Chapter Master
·        Honour Guard
·        Chaplain
·        Librarian
·        Sternguard Veterans
·        Vanguard Veterans
·        Terminator Squad (both types)
·        Rhino
·        Land Raider (all types)
·        Drop Pod

All units except HQ units are Scoring.

“Fixed Theme” Army- Space Marine Assault Company

In your army you must include a HQ choice and at least two Scoring Units. Armies may include:
·        1-3 HQ units
·        0-4 Elites
·        0-8 Troops
·        0-4 Fast Attack
·        0-4 Heavy Support

An Assault Company has access to the following units:

·        Captain (must take a Bike or Jump Pack)
·        Command Squad (must take Bikes)
·        Chaplain (must take a Bike or Jump Pack)
·        Librarian (must take a Bike or Jump Pack)
·        Space Marine Bike Squad/Attack Bikes
·        Assault Squad
·        Rhino
·        Razorback
·        Drop Pod

All units except HQ units are Scoring.

Each of these armies has unit selections set in stone, but pretty much everything is Scoring. None of these armies could be achieved using the Points system from last time, as there are simply not enough points there to make everything Scoring. The main weaknesses of these armies stem from their unit choice: the Battle Company is a jack-of-all-trades, master of none, the First Company has a lower model count and the Assault Company has no long-range power at all.

If you think there are improvements that need to be made, or that this simply doesn’t work, go ahead and comment. If you want to praise me, do the same.

I prefer the first method due to its total customization possibility. Are we assuming that for this method the player could still choose not to use the system and simply work with the FOC as given?

Yes, this is meant to work as an optional 'army deal' package and not a standalone. I too prefer the first one. But with work this one could expand on the army deal idea you brought up in the comments for the first method.

Attack Bikes should be allowed for the Assault Company, perhaps as a Heavy Support choice.

I never remember that Attack Bikes can be a standalone unit...

That is however an excellent idea.
